A playful project «One square meter» touches a painful topic of refusals that artists receive when trying to promote their work for an exhibition in an art institution.
Unveiling the mechanisms lying at the core of work of a particulat gallery «Victoria», we offered any artist a chance to rent a space on the wall for a set price. Thus, everyone having at least 50 roubles (50 eurocent) could rent a square meter of the exhibition space for an hour. The price could come up if he/she desired to exhibit for the whole day/week/two weeks, or have a professional text written by the curators of the gallery. He/she could even get a personal vernissage with drinks and a Dj.
The resulting exhibition was a dynamic structure where artworks were hung and taken off on a daily basis, and a whole range of motifs and heart-breaking stories came up during curator's communication with artists. The role of a curator in this project diminished to managers': processing the coming requests, helping with assembling and exhibiting the artworks.
The important part of the financial scheme of the project was that none of the recieved money came as the gallery's income. It all constituted a Fund to support local artists and was given as a prize during the end-of-the-year ceremony celebrating the Best Artist and Best Curator. Every artwork on every rented square meter, even exhibited for an hour, had a chance to compete for the prize.
