At the dawn
Victoria Gallery
april 2023
"At the Dawn" is the final project in the building occupied by Victoria Gallery before it undergoes reconstruction. It marks the transition from something familiar that is about to disappear to something new that is on the horizon.
In the year 2022/2023, many of us have experienced separation - from friends and loved ones, from our homeland, and from the future as we had envisioned it during calmer times, that is difficult to imagine in the new realm, unsettling and falling apart.

The project takes inspiration from 'alba', a courthouse genre of Spanish lyrics, similar to a serenade. However, while a serenade is performed in the evening, an alba is a song of dawn. Lovers part ways as the first rays of sun appear. Chased away by a guard chasing and warned by a friend of the impending awakening of Signora's husband, their blissful twilight of morning comes to an end.
"At the Dawn" invites viewers to experience and understand separation through music. We open up previously inaccessible spaces and offer a unique way to explore the empty floors, halls, and back rooms to the sounds of contemporary albas.

This journey holds secrets - artistic interventions from authors who have a connection to the gallery through their exhibition history or friendship. Alone in the ruins, their artworks become speculative models of time and space.
"At the Dawn" is a reflection on the future that emerges from breaking away from the past, and an offering to experience the current moment with one's own body, alone. By participating in this farewell ritual, we hope to see more clearly our new path. At the dawn, we separate. To meet again.
