What is Zavolga? Zavolga is zavolga is zavolga is zavolga.
'Zavolga', like 'freedom', comprises a complex of valuable and dear meanings. It is the right shore of the Volga river that faces the city of Samara. It is a network of self-organised settlements on no-one's land. It is the motherland of 'across-the-river' people, who are wild, free and inventive. Zavolga is an existential antagonist to everything planned, beurocratic and urban. It is an autonomous society and a state that rises its flags every spring.
On the Archstoyaniye festival for landscape architecture Victoria gallery was presenting its pavilion, which was inspired by the wild camps on the right side of the Volga river. Its ever-growing architecture became a place for a number of artistic and community activities, as well as a home for all the festival people.
Every day its structure was growing during the workshop "The cookbook of Zavolga". The walls of the pavilion were an open-air exhibition with artworks by artists from Samara region printed on banner. During the day we learned to build non-human shelters and took part in forum-theatre by the fire at night.
In collaboration with the Club of Young Architects DOM:A we practiced Zhiguly yoga, enjoyed High Volga Cuisine, created epicycle design items and mediated through the Volga Round-the-world Museum.
